What can I do if I see an example of animal cruelty when I am in Portugal?
There is no equivalent in Portugal such as the RSPCA to report your concerns. The only official organization is SEPNA (Servico de Proteccao da Natureza e do Ambiente).
We receive a steady trickle of appeals for help from tourists in Portugal.
Our advice:
Contact SEPNA if appropriate. They have a telephone and e-mail response service – ask locally for up to date contact information.
Also speak to people while you are there – e.g. your hotel, tourist office, town hall, local newspaper, police, nearest animal shelter etc.
Any of these might be able to offer advice.
Always if you can:
Take photos for evidence, give exact location, times, dates, briefly and concisely state your concerns.
Of course this can be difficult for foreigners to do in Portugal. So email us with your information plus photos. We will translate into Portuguese and follow up with all relevant parties. We’ll also keep you informed.
